SGU Language Center which is under the auspices of SGU’s Academic Research and Community Service (ARCS) held a “Basic English Workshop for State Civil Apparatus (ASN)”. The event was attended by 30 ASN representatives, 15 each from Tangerang city government and 15 from Tangerang district government. In this increasingly connected era of globalization, the ability to speak English is one of the important skills that must be possessed by the State Civil Apparatus (ASN) to support their duties and functions in providing public services.

With the increasing need to communicate effectively in English, SGU Language Center sees the importance of providing basic training for ASNs in Tangerang. This workshop aims to improve the participants’ basic English skills, so that they can communicate more confidently and effectively in their work environment.

The workshop was led by two experienced English language experts, namely James Edward Hunt, MBA, and Barry Andrew Kozemko Jr., M.A. Both have strong backgrounds in English language teaching. With interactive and fun teaching methods, they managed to create a conducive and effective learning atmosphere.
The first session of the workshop began with material on how to introduce yourself confidently and accurately. James Edward Hunt explained the importance of starting introductions with a proper greeting and continuing with basic information such as name, job title, and agency of origin.

Participants were invited to practice introducing themselves in turn with their partner. This exercise helped improve their confidence and ability to introduce themselves in public. After understanding how to introduce themselves, participants then learned how to ask and respond to questions about themselves. Participants were invited to practice in a role-play situation, where they had to ask and answer these questions. This session helped participants to become more familiar with the structure of questions and answers in English, as well as improve their listening and understanding skills.

The next topic was how to write a basic email to ask for help and provide information. Barry Andrew Kozemko Jr explained the structure of a good email, starting from the opening greeting, the body of the message, to the closing.

In the last session, participants were taught how to describe their work. Barry Andrew Kozemko Jr. explained the importance of using precise and clear words in describing job duties and responsibilities.

The “Basic English for State Civil Apparatus (ASN)” workshop organized by SGU Language Center was a success. The participants not only gained new knowledge, but also the opportunity to practice and improve their English skills in a supportive and interactive atmosphere.

SGU Language Center is committed to continuing to provide quality training for ASNs and the wider community, supporting efforts to increase capacity and competence in various fields. This workshop is just one of many programs to come, all of which aim to empower individuals and organizations through relevant and sustainable education and training.
